Dent M. Thompson has served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Phoenix Air Group since the mid-1980s. Under his and his brother Mark’s leadership, the Cartersville, Georgia company grew from a small charter operation into the world’s only air carrier equipped to transport patients with highly infectious diseases — a capability put to the test in 2014, when Phoenix Air flew more than 40 missions evacuating Ebola patients, including Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, from West Africa.
That expertise was called on again in 2020. As COVID-19 emerged in Wuhan, China, Phoenix Air organized five specially equipped Boeing 747 flights — built on the same biocontainment technology developed for Ebola — to bring home more than 1,100 Americans and 100 Canadians stranded at the outbreak’s epicenter.
